Don't confuse the Truth With Facts

Lowenstein and Fouda falsely assert that Israel occupied "the remaining parts of historic Palestine" after the Six Day War. Dear Mr. Choiniere:

I was pleased to see the excellent commentary written by Moshe Ya'Alon, which I had sent to you, published in today's paper. It contains, as I said, one of the most cogent explanations of what's been wrong with our Middle East diplomacy.

Unfortunately, the op-ed by Jennifer Lowenstein and Hassan Fouda also published today, included below for your convenience, contains at least one glaring and indisputable factual error which should not have gotten past The Day's editors. I request that, as called for by codes of ethics for journalists, a correction be issued.

Lowenstein and Fouda falsely assert that Israel occupied "the remaining parts of historic Palestine" after the Six Day War.

The mandate over historic Palestine given to Great Britain by the League of Nations comprised a total of 125,606 square kilometers, including all of present day Israel, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza. The portion of that under Israeli control after the Six Day War included only Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, comprising only 27,710 square kilometers, just 23 percent of historic Palestine.

Generally, the arguments made by Lowenstein and Fouda throughout their op-ed are unsupportable, but they are opinions and the appropriate venue for addressing them is through letters to the editor; I would be writing one myself, on behalf of PRIMER, were it not for The Day's policy of not publishing letters from writers outside its circulation area.

This does not apply to the factually false statement that Israel occupied "the remaining parts of historic Palestine" and that statement should be officially corrected by The Day.

Sincerely,
